Disturbing Statistics

Adolescents who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to become dependent on alcohol in adulthood. Underage drinking poses a major risk for youth with alcohol being a factor in the three leading causes of death: accidental (including car crashes, drowning, etc.), suicide and homicide.

Alcohol and substance abuse is linked to lower school performance and higher dropout rates, increased violence, crime and risky sexual behavior. New research indicates that underage binge drinking can cause permanent brain damage and hinder development.

Parents and community can make a difference

The good news is that parents are the number one influence on their children’s decisions about drugs and alcohol. PREVENT! Coalition encourages parents to talk early and often with their kids about drugs and alcohol.

Collaborative community efforts have also been shown to reduce youth substance abuse by increasing opportunities for youth to engage in positive activities, changing social attitudes, and encouraging policy that promotes prevention. For every dollar spent on prevention services, up to 20 dollars is saved in treatment and other social costs.

PREVENT! is a coalition of active citizens and community organizations working together toward a common goal of building a healthy, safe, and drug-free community, in Clark County, Washington. PREVENT! coalition members represent a wide-range of sectors throughout Clark County including: business owners, education professionals, prevention specialists, local government, mental health and health care professionals, media and public relations experts, and social service professionals.

Supporting this event are Educational Service District 112, Downtown Camas Association, Fit-Right NW, iQ Credit Union, Burgerville, Washougal Sport and Spine, and many volunteers.
